Laboratory of Light in Vilnius Academy of Arts

Interior design student Lukas Dereškevičius chose a topic of natural light for his graduation project. I had a lot of joy to supervise him and even collaborate a little. In roughly three months he made a lot of spontaneous experiments and managed to convert a tiny room in academy into a laboratory of light.

It is meant to make sun-studies on physical architectural models, allowing to simulate shadows falling into the rooms in different times of the year and different hours.

As the room has only north-facing windows, I built a little heliostat to drop some sunlight inside. We assembled it on the rooftop of the sports hall and Lukas mounted extra mirror on the ceiling, to drop the light down.

It is still much to be desired from these solutions, not everything is finished and working as inteded, but the start is beautiful, and the proces was really inspiring.

You can find a booklet of Lukas experiments.

And it is now featured in Dezeen.
