Solar energy as primary energy resource

Humanity produces and consumes around 630Ej (or 20TW) yearly

Sun yearly irradiates around 23 000 Tw on land mass only, with theoretical loss of 65% discounted. That is roughly 2000Ej (or 63TWyr) or per day, more than triple than we can consume in a whole year.

Global energy consumption is still dominated by fossil fuels by a large margin.

And globally, energy usage is set to grow

Solar irradiation comes in the form of heat. Converting it to electricity comes at maximum 21% efficiency. Direct heat absorbtion is usually much more efficient (up to 98% to the primary surface, but then it always drops due to emissivity and transfer to carrier, e.g. water. I cannot give a single efficiency number due to variety of tested systems, but the ranges I found span from 20% to 90%).

In European domestic environment, vast majority of energy is used as heat (home heating, hot water, cooking)

Domestic environment accounts roughly for 26% of global energy consumption. Also, I have not found data on global consumption by energy type yet, but in the global South, percenteage of energy used for heat should be significantly lower.

The whole picture indicates, that at least in Europe (and comparable climate zones) using more direct Solar energy in domestic environment has significant unexplored potential.
